What the tradition reads
The Moon holds no domicile, exaltation or particular weakness in Gemini by the scheme Ptolemy sets out in the Tetrabiblos; the sign belongs to Mercury, and the Moon there is read as a feeling nature borrowing the host planet's own curiosity and quickness rather than its own instinct to simply sit inside a feeling and let it run its course. Gemini is a mutable air sign, read by the tradition as variety and the gathering of information from every available direction, and the Moon set there is read as an emotional life expressed through talking, comparing notes and analysing rather than through silence. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Gemini Moons as restless and endlessly interesting company, quick to reorganise their own homes and routines the moment either grows stale, more inclined to analyse a feeling from several angles than to simply live inside it undivided. The tradition names emotional shallowness as the placement's ordinary cost, a Moon that can talk its way around a feeling so thoroughly that it never quite settles into experiencing it, though the same quickness is credited with an unusual adaptability: an emotional nature that can follow almost any conversation or any change in circumstance without losing its footing.
The story
Castor and Pollux, Gemini's twins, were born of the same mother but not the same nature: Pollux, fathered by Zeus, was immortal, while Castor, son of the mortal king Tyndareus, was not. When Castor died, Pollux refused to be separated from him and asked Zeus to divide his own immortality between them rather than keep it whole for himself, and the two were set in the sky together, one life stretched across two people who would otherwise have gone entirely separate ways. Selene offers her own quieter version of the same division: the Moon she drives across the sky is never fully one thing at once, always some mixture of the lit half turned toward the sun and the dark half turned away, a single disc that is nevertheless always, in some proportion, two different Moons layered together. Where the twins had to be split apart by death before their shared nature became visible, Selene's own duality is simply how she has always appeared, changing nightly rather than choosing once. The Moon in Gemini is read against both patterns at once, an emotional nature genuinely at home holding two things side by side, neither one fully suppressing the other, closer to Selene's ordinary changeability than to the twins' one dramatic, once-only act of sharing.
