The Moon in Capricorn
the Moon in tropical Capricorn
What the tradition reads
The classical scheme gives the Moon its detriment in Capricorn, the sign directly opposite its own domicile of Cancer; Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos assigns Cancer to the Moon and Capricorn to Saturn, and a detriment is read not quite as a fault but as a planet working against the grain of the sign it stands in. Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign, read as structure, patience and the long climb, values that sit uneasily beside the Moon's own instinct to feel first and reason about it only afterward. The tradition reads the Moon here as a feeling nature trained early into usefulness: a person who learns responsibility before it is asked of them, who comforts other people more readily than they let themselves be comforted, and whose loyalty, once given, arrives slowly and is nearly impossible to take back. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Capricorn Moons as needing to feel useful and productive above almost anything else, maintaining an emotional control that reads as steady and reliable even while real feeling may be turbulent underneath, valuing structure and a hard earned sense of respectability. What the tradition credits the placement with, over time, is an emotional endurance that outlasts almost anything, a nature that does not panic, though it may also need, more than most, to be given permission to simply rest.
The story
Capricorn's own goat-fish shape comes from Pan, caught in the open when the monster Typhon attacked the assembled gods; in his panic to escape into the river he only half completed his change into a fish, leaving himself a goat above the waterline and a fish below, the same shape the constellation has kept ever since. Selene has her own recorded encounter with the same god: Virgil tells that Pan seduced her with the gift of a fine white fleece, wrapping himself in a sheepskin to complete the disguise and draw the Moon down from her usual course for one plain, earthbound night. It is an odd pairing beside Selene's better known grief for Endymion, the sleeping mortal she visits nightly without ever waking him, a rare lapse into ordinary temptation rather than devoted, patient waiting. Read against Capricorn, the sign of the long, structured climb, Selene's one lapse looks almost like relief: proof that even a goddess whose whole nature is change, tide and phase can, once, be caught by nothing more dramatic than a warm fleece and the promise of rest, the same permission to simply stop climbing for a night that the tradition says this placement's feeling nature so rarely gives itself.
