The Moon in Aquarius
the Moon in tropical Aquarius
What the tradition reads
The Moon holds no domicile, exaltation or particular weakness in Aquarius by the scheme Ptolemy sets out in the Tetrabiblos; the sign belongs to Saturn, with modern astrologers adding Uranus, and the Moon there is read as a feeling nature borrowing the host planets' own detachment rather than expressing its own most instinctive register. Aquarius is a fixed air sign, read by the tradition as reform, originality and a certain pride in standing apart from the crowd, and the Moon set there is read as an emotional life organised the same way: observant of other people's inner workings, genuinely humanitarian, yet uneasy with feeling that looks too ordinary or too needy. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Aquarius Moons as lifelong students of human nature who often grew up feeling different, priding themselves on being detached and "above" emotional messiness even as they quietly expect the people close to them to match their own independence. The tradition names emotional distance as the placement's ordinary cost, a Moon that can deny feelings as irrational as jealousy simply because they are inconvenient to its self image, though the same distance is credited with an unusual objectivity, an emotional nature that can see a whole group's patterns clearly because it has never fully lost itself inside any one relationship.
The story
The Greeks placed Ganymede among the stars as Aquarius, a Phrygian shepherd prince swept up from Mount Ida by Zeus in the form of a large bird and carried to Olympus, where he was given eternal youth and set to pouring wine for the gods, a mortal life interrupted from above and remade permanently. Selene's own most famous myth runs on a similar hinge: she fell in love with the mortal Endymion, and in the main account Zeus granted Endymion a choice and he chose eternal sleep rather than an ordinary death, so that his youth would never fade and she could visit him each night without waking him. Both stories solve the same problem, a mortal life too precious to be allowed to age and end normally, but they solve it in opposite directions: Ganymede is lifted up into permanent company, useful and visible at the gods' own table, while Endymion is set down into permanent solitude, beautiful and untouched but essentially alone even in the middle of being loved. The Moon in Aquarius is read against exactly that second, quieter option, an emotional nature that, like Selene's own choice for Endymion, would often rather preserve a connection at a careful distance than risk what closer, more ordinary contact might cost it.
