What the tradition reads
Mercury has no domicile, exaltation or particular weakness in Scorpio by Ptolemy's classical scheme; the sign belongs to Mars, and to Pluto in the modern astrologers' addition, and Mercury there is read as a mind pulled toward the sign's own depth and intensity rather than expressing its usual lightness. Scorpio is a fixed water sign, read by the tradition as the sign of what does not let go until the truth beneath it is found, and Mercury set there is read as a mind built for exactly that kind of digging: it notices what others miss, keeps what it learns rather than announcing it, and rarely accepts the first explanation offered. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Scorpio Mercury as driven to get to the very heart of any matter, communicating with real intensity, naturally drawn to intrigue and suspicious of easy answers, though capable of shrewd, clear judgment whenever it is not personally involved, and fiercely defensive in an argument on behalf of whoever it cares about. The tradition's caution about the placement is a mind that can turn suspicion into a habit, reading hidden motives into situations that may have none, since a mind trained to dig will keep digging even where there is nothing buried.
The story
Hermes, the god the Romans renamed Mercury, carried one office that sits naturally beside Scorpio's oldest theme: he was psychopompos, the guide who led the newly dead down to the underworld and, on occasion, brought a soul back up again, one of the few gods granted safe passage across that particular threshold. Scorpio's own myth is built from a comparable border. The scorpion that killed Orion, sent by Gaia after the hunter boasted he would kill every beast on earth, was set among the stars at the opposite edge of the sky from its victim, so that as the scorpion rises the hunter is already fleeing below the horizon, a chase across the line between night and day that never quite ends. Serket, the Egyptian scorpion goddess, kept a comparable pair of thresholds on the other side of the world's mythology, both protecting the sealed jars of the dead and, in her aspect as a mother goddess, guarding the infant Horus from harm during his most vulnerable early days. Mercury, the traveller between worlds, and Scorpio, the sign built around exactly these doorways, meet at the same point: a mind granted safe passage into the things other minds are too frightened to look at directly.
