Mercury in Pisces

Mercury in tropical Pisces

What the tradition reads

Pisces is Mercury's fall as well as its detriment, the only sign in which the classical scheme records both weaknesses at once: Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos gives Mercury its exaltation in Virgo, so Pisces, directly opposite, carries the fall, while Mercury's domicile in Gemini leaves Sagittarius and Pisces both as signs it does not rule, working hardest of all in the one sign that is simultaneously its fall and its detriment together. Pisces is a mutable water sign, the last of the twelve, read by the tradition as a place where the ordinary boundaries between one thing and another dissolve, and Mercury there is read as a mind working about as far from its own quick, precise, boundary-drawing nature as it is possible to get. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Pisces Mercury as gentle and often poetic, communicating with what it calls "a soft touch," absorbing the moods of a room rather than tracking its details, an excellent listener whose own thinking can be moody and genuinely difficult to organise into a firm decision. The tradition names disorganisation as the placement's clearest cost, a mind that can lose the practical thread of a conversation entirely, though the same dissolving of boundaries is credited with an intuitive sensitivity to subtlety that a more precise, more clearly bounded Mercury would likely miss altogether.

The story

Aphrodite and her son Eros, caught in the open when the monster Typhon attacked, escaped by transforming themselves into two fish and swimming away rather than standing to fight or even fleeing on foot, dissolving the very shape a boundary would normally be drawn around. Mercury's usual office is to guide something safely across a boundary, whether a message between two parties or a soul between the living and the dead, work that depends on the boundary itself staying reasonably clear so that a crossing can actually be marked and completed. Pisces offers no such boundary to work with: it is the sign in which even the ancient astrologers already read a place where every ordinary edge, between one feeling and another, one person and another, dissolves before it can be properly drawn. Mercury, weakest here of anywhere in the zodiac, is read as a herald finally without a clear border left to carry his message across, its usual precision loosened into something closer to Aphrodite's own transformation: not a mind that fails outright, but one that has to learn an entirely different, more fluid way of getting a feeling across when the straight, well marked road it usually relies on simply is not there anymore.
