What the tradition reads
Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos allots Gemini to Mercury outright, one of the two signs, along with Virgo, in which Mercury is read as fully at home rather than a guest borrowing someone else's colouring. Gemini is a mutable air sign, read by the tradition as the gathering of information from as many directions as possible, and Mercury in its own sign here is read as intellect expressed at its plainest and quickest: curious about nearly everything, comfortable moving between subjects, and instinctively logical rather than intuitive in how it works a problem through. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Gemini Mercury as quick-witted and eclectic, a fast learner who gets bored easily and carries a certain nervous energy, broad in interest though sometimes only lightly so, at times more detached in conversation than the sign's evident sociability might suggest. The tradition names superficiality as the placement's obvious cost, a mind so quick to move to the next idea that it can leave the last one only half explored, though the same quickness is credited with a genuine versatility: an intellect that can hold a competent conversation on almost any subject because it has never let itself get stuck too long on any single one.
The story
The Roman Mercury was, from the start, something of a composite figure, arriving late into Roman religion through a merger with the Greek Hermes and absorbing, along the way, characteristics of the older Etruscan god Turms, so that the deity later worshipped at his temple by the Circus Maximus was never really one single, original god so much as several older ones folded into a single name and set of attributes. Gemini tells almost the same story about people rather than gods: Castor and Pollux were born of one mother but two different fathers, one mortal and one divine, and became a single, inseparable unit in the sky only after Pollux asked to share his own immortality with his dying brother rather than keep the difference between them intact. Mercury, at home in this sign as in no other beside Virgo, is read as a mind naturally built the same composite way, comfortable holding two or more distinct ideas, voices or disciplines together as a single working intellect rather than treating a difference as something that has to be resolved into one side winning.
