Mercury in Aquarius

Mercury in tropical Aquarius

What the tradition reads

Mercury holds no domicile, exaltation or particular weakness in Aquarius by the scheme Ptolemy sets out in the Tetrabiblos; the sign belongs to Saturn, with modern astrologers adding Uranus, and Mercury there is read as a mind borrowing the host planets' own detachment and originality rather than its own quicker, more sociable register. Aquarius is a fixed air sign, read by the tradition as reform and a pride in thinking differently from whatever the crowd currently believes, and Mercury set there is read as an intellect built around exactly that instinct: genuinely unconventional, more interested in an idea's originality than in whether it is comfortable to hear. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Aquarius Mercury as quick-thinking and sharply observant, drawn to scientific or metaphysical subjects, sometimes carrying what it calls an "intellectual agenda" strong enough to press its own conclusions on other people rather than simply offer them. The tradition names a certain rigidity as the placement's cost, a mind so committed to its own settled, unconventional view that it can be as inflexible about it as any more traditional thinker is about theirs, though the same conviction is credited with the nerve to keep proposing ideas everyone else finds too strange to take seriously, until, occasionally, they turn out not to be.

The story

Hermes, the god the Romans renamed Mercury, was credited by the Greeks with inventing the very idea of clever communication itself, at ease crossing boundaries other gods respected without question and remembered among the Celtic and Germanic peoples, as Julius Caesar recorded, as the inventor of every art. Aquarius keeps a comparable boundary crosser in Ganymede, the Phrygian shepherd prince Zeus swept up from Mount Ida in the form of a large bird and carried bodily out of the ordinary, mortal world into a permanent place at the gods' own table, an abrupt, engineered transition managed entirely by someone more powerful moving him somewhere new. Mercury's own long-standing office as psychopomp, the guide who leads souls across the border between the living and the dead, makes him a natural match for exactly that kind of crossing, someone whose whole role is escorting others into unfamiliar territory rather than making the crossing dramatic or frightening. Set in Aquarius, the sign built around one very particular, engineered elevation out of the ordinary, Mercury is read as the mind that is genuinely comfortable there: quick to cross into strange or advanced ideas most people have not yet been introduced to, and more interested in what a new way of thinking can build than in staying anywhere familiar for long.
