Mars in Taurus

Mars in tropical Taurus

What the tradition reads

Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos places Mars's detriment in Taurus, directly opposite his own domicile of Scorpio; a detriment is read as a planet working against the grain of the sign it occupies, and Taurus, ruled by Venus, asks a force built for speed and direct confrontation to instead slow down and simply endure. Taurus is a fixed earth sign, read by the tradition as stability and a settled, unhurried pace, and Mars set there is read as a drive expressed less through quick action than through sheer, patient staying power, force that outlasts an opponent rather than overwhelming one quickly. Cafe Astrology's delineation describes Mars in Taurus as generally calm and easygoing, capable nonetheless of a genuinely powerful temper once provoked past its considerable patience, and essentially immovable under any attempt to rush it, holding its own pace regardless of outside pressure. The tradition names stubbornness as the placement's ordinary cost, a force too fixed in its own rhythm to seize a fast-moving opportunity while the moment for it still exists, though the same fixity is credited with an endurance that quicker, more impulsive placements rarely match: a Mars that, once finally provoked into moving, does not stop again until it has actually finished.

The story

Among Taurus's several identities is the Cretan bull, the wild, immensely powerful animal Heracles was sent to capture alive as one of his twelve labours rather than simply kill outright, a task that rewarded patience and sustained effort over any single decisive blow. Ares, whose own preferred method is exactly the opposite, a fast, direct strike that ends a contest quickly, finds in Taurus a creature that cannot be beaten that way at all: something so solid and so slow to provoke that it has to be worn down and outlasted rather than overwhelmed in one motion. Mars in his detriment here is read as forced to adopt the labour's method rather than his own instinct, a force that must learn Taurus's own patience before it can accomplish anything, trading the satisfaction of a quick, visible victory for the slower, less glamorous work of simply not giving up before the bull does.
