Ketu in Virgo

Ketu, the south lunar node, in tropical Virgo, named by Wikipedia's account of the node as a sign Ketu rules jointly with Mercury

What the tradition reads

Wikipedia's own account of Ketu names Virgo, jointly with Mercury, as the sign it rules, a claim distinct from the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra's own statement that Ketu's proper sign is Scorpio, with Pisces given only as an alternate view among certain sages; the same classical text, in a separate technique concerning a planet's degree within a sign, also names Virgo among four signs, alongside Aries, Taurus and Gemini, where Ketu in a condition it calls Sayana brings plenty of wealth rather than the greater illness it threatens elsewhere. Virgo is a mutable earth sign, ruled by Mercury, read by the tradition as practical service, careful work and exacting standards. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the south node in Virgo, from the page pairing it with the north node in Pisces, describes the pattern being released here as an unremitting worry and a vague guilt about underperforming, an excessive analysis of details that no longer serves any real growth. Ketu in Virgo, on the reading that gives it real rulership here, is read as a competence and a discipline already so thoroughly mastered that the worry Virgo usually attaches to service can, at last, be set down.

The story

Ketu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, when the demon Svarbhanu was beheaded by Vishnu's discus for stealing a share of the gods' own nectar of immortality; because the nectar had already reached his throat, neither half of him could die, and the body walked on afterward as Ketu, complete and functioning without the head that once directed its work. Virgo's own maiden carries several names in the old tellings, among them Astraea, the last immortal willing to remain on earth and keep doing its careful, exacting work once every other god had already withdrawn to Olympus. A body that keeps moving and working without any head left to plan or worry over the task meets, in Virgo, a figure whose whole myth is defined by relentless, careful attention to a job others had already abandoned; Ketu in Virgo, on the reading naming it as the node's own ground, is read as that same careful labour finally performed without the anxious oversight Virgo usually insists on, competence running now on its own, unwatched.
