Ketu in Taurus
Ketu, the south lunar node, in tropical Taurus, its own debilitation
What the tradition reads
The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra names Ketu's debilitation sign as Taurus, directly opposite its own exaltation in Scorpio, a reading Wikipedia's own account of the node confirms even while noting that some modern astrologers, naming Gemini as the true debilitation instead, dispute it; the same classical text, in a separate technique concerning a planet's particular degree within a sign, nonetheless also names Taurus among four signs, alongside Aries, Gemini and Virgo, where Ketu in a condition it calls Sayana brings plenty of wealth rather than the greater illness it threatens in every other sign. Taurus is a fixed earth sign, ruled by Venus, read by the tradition as steady accumulation and the material world handled with patience. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the south node in Taurus, from the page pairing it with the north node in Scorpio, describes the pattern being released here as an overreliance on the self, a clinging to possessions and habits, and a fear of crisis kept at bay by an excessive focus on security. Ketu in Taurus, weak by one classical measure and specially favoured by another, is read as a fluency with material comfort this life is meant to release even while, at certain degrees, it can still pay out one last measure of exactly that same comfort on the way out.
The story
Ketu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, when the demon Svarbhanu was beheaded by Vishnu's discus for stealing a share of the gods' own nectar of immortality; because the nectar had already reached his throat, neither half of him could die, and the body walked on afterward as Ketu, asking nothing further from the world that had already given it everything it needed. Taurus's own bull was, in the Greek telling, Zeus himself disguised to carry off the princess Europa, though the sign was already old to the Mesopotamians before that story existed, worshipped as the Great Bull of Heaven marking the turning of their own year. A body that has already had its fill and needs nothing further meets, in Taurus, a sign built entirely around wanting more, patiently, and keeping what is gathered; Ketu in Taurus is read as an appetite for material comfort already so thoroughly spent that the sign's own steady accumulation starts to feel, to this placement, like effort with nothing left to actually prove.
