Ketu in Sagittarius
Ketu, the south lunar node, in tropical Sagittarius, its own mulatrikona
What the tradition reads
The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra names Dhanu, Sagittarius, as Ketu's own mulatrikona, its second highest classical dignity, and some modern astrologers, disputing the same text's placement of Ketu's exaltation in Scorpio, argue that Sagittarius should be read as the true exaltation instead, a disagreement Wikipedia's own account of the node records without fully resolving. Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign, ruled by Jupiter, read by the tradition as belief, higher learning and the instinct to aim past the horizon one was given. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the south node in Sagittarius, from the page pairing it with the north node in Gemini, describes the pattern being released here as holding beliefs and opinions without gathering the facts, a self righteousness that runs roughshod over other people's feelings, and an excess of nervous energy that rushes through life without much tact. Ketu here, on ground the classical texts already treat as unusually strong, is read as a conviction and a philosophy of life already fully worked out, certainty this placement is meant to rest in rather than keep defending.
The story
Ketu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, when the demon Svarbhanu was beheaded by Vishnu's discus for stealing a share of the gods' own nectar of immortality; because the nectar had already reached his throat, neither half of him could die, and the body walked on afterward as Ketu, complete without the head that once did its thinking for it. Sagittarius's own archer carries two identities in the old tellings, one naming him Chiron, a centaur who devised the constellation himself to guide the Argonauts, the other naming him Crotus, a satyr credited with inventing archery and placed in the sky at the Muses' own request. A body that no longer needs a head to keep moving with purpose meets, in Sagittarius, an aim that is said never to miss its mark once it has been loosed; Ketu in Sagittarius, on ground the texts already call strong, is read as an aim so thoroughly practiced it no longer needs conscious thought behind it at all.
