Ketu in Pisces
Ketu, the south lunar node, in tropical Pisces, its own sign by the alternate view of some jyotish sages
What the tradition reads
Some jyotish authorities, according to the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra's own account of the differing views among sages, name Meen, Pisces, rather than Scorpio as Ketu's own sign, a dignity the main text elsewhere assigns to Scorpio alongside Ketu's exaltation there. Pisces is a mutable water sign, the last of the twelve, read by the tradition as the point where boundaries between one thing and another grow thin. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the south node in Pisces, drawn from the page pairing it with the north node in Virgo, describes the pattern being released here as an unremitting worry, a vague but persistent guilt about underperforming, excessive analysis and an overattention to details that no longer serve any real growth. Ketu there, on the view naming Pisces as its own sign, is read as compassion, imagination and a dissolving of firm boundaries already fully mastered, close to native rather than merely comfortable, a fluency with letting go that this placement is meant to simply rest in rather than keep working to improve.
The story
Ketu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, when the demon Svarbhanu was beheaded by Vishnu's discus for stealing a share of the gods' own nectar of immortality; because the nectar had already passed his throat, neither half of him could die, and the body walked on afterward as Ketu, whole in itself and needing no face to keep existing. Pisces' own two fish are remembered in one telling as Aphrodite and her son Eros, transformed to escape the monster Typhon; the constellation's own stars carry a separate description besides, two fish whose tails are pictured knotted together by a cord at the star known as Alpha Piscium. A body that has already proven it can survive complete and undivided, without even needing its own head, meets, in Pisces, a pair remembered first for a narrow escape and only afterward, in a separate telling, for the cord that still ties them together in the sky; Ketu in Pisces, on the reading that gives it real ground here, is read as a boundarylessness so old and so thoroughly settled that it no longer needs even that cord to stay whole.
