Ketu in Libra

Ketu, the south lunar node, in tropical Libra

What the tradition reads

The jyotish texts give Ketu no exaltation, own sign or mulatrikona in Libra, and the tradition reads it there as release set down on ground already known rather than a placement carrying any particular dignity of its own. Libra is a cardinal air sign, ruled by Venus, read by the tradition as balance, fairness and partnership. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the south node in Libra, drawn from the page pairing it with the north node in Aries, describes the pattern being released here as a tendency to rely on the self so heavily that important others end up alienated, an excessive competitiveness shading into a me first attitude that no longer needs proving. Because the south node marks what is already known rather than what must still be sought, Ketu in Libra is read as a fluency with fairness, negotiation and partnership so thoroughly already mastered in some earlier telling that this life is meant to set the pursuit of it down rather than chase it further, comfortable enough with cooperation that it can afford, for once, to act alone.

The story

Ketu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, when the demon Svarbhanu was beheaded by Vishnu's discus for stealing a portion of the nectar of immortality that had been measured out for the gods alone, an old imbalance the discus corrected the only way it could, cutting the demon into the head that became Rahu and the body that became Ketu. Libra's own scales belong, in the constellation's own myth, to Astraea, the goddess associated with justice, weighing every claim before it can be granted. A body already cut down to its fair and final measure meets, in Libra, the very instrument built to weigh out exactly that kind of measure for everyone else; Ketu in Libra is read as a fairness already settled and already paid for, a scale that, having already balanced its own account once, no longer needs constant checking against a partner's.
