What the tradition reads

Leo is the Sun's own sign, fixed fire, read by the tradition as the placement of a self that wants to be seen and to lead from the front. Ketu, the south node, is read as the opposite instinct set down inside exactly that territory: the part of a person that has already had its fill of being at the centre and now finds the display Leo asks for slightly beside the point. The story

The lion of Leo is set in the sky, in the fullest Greek telling, as the trophy of Heracles' first labour: the Nemean lion's hide could not be pierced by any blade, so the hero strangled the beast with his bare hands and afterward wore its skin as armour, and Zeus placed the animal among the stars to honour his son's first proof of strength. It is a myth of a creature whose whole claim to fame was its own impressive, undefeated body, finally overcome and then commemorated anyway. Ketu's own story tells of Svarbhanu, the demon whose head was severed by Vishnu's discus at the churning of the ocean of milk after he stole a place among the immortals; the head became Rahu, and the headless trunk became Ketu, a body stripped of the very feature, the face, that Leo's lion and every proud thing depends on for recognition. Set together, the lion's captured hide and the node's missing head both describe the same lesson the tradition draws from this placement: the old glory is real and already spent, and what remains does its work without needing to be looked at.
