Ketu in Gemini
Ketu, the south lunar node, in tropical Gemini
What the tradition reads
Some modern astrologers, disputing the classical Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra's own placement of Ketu's weakest sign in Taurus, argue instead that Ketu is debilitated in Gemini and exalted in Sagittarius, a disagreement Wikipedia's own account of the node records without fully resolving; the same classical text, in an entirely separate technique concerning a planet's degree within a sign, also names Gemini among four signs, alongside Aries, Taurus and Virgo, where Ketu in a particular condition it calls Sayana brings plenty of wealth rather than the increased illness it otherwise threatens elsewhere. Gemini is a mutable air sign, ruled by Mercury, read by the tradition as communication, curiosity and the exchange of ideas. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the south node in Gemini, from the page pairing it with the north node in Sagittarius, describes the pattern being released here as an overwhelm from information, a mental overstimulation that leaves a person unable to make an effective decision, trapped in excessive logic and detail at the expense of the bigger picture. Ketu in Gemini, on this reading, has already exhausted a fluency with pure information and is meant to set it down rather than keep collecting more of it.
The story
Ketu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, when the demon Svarbhanu was beheaded by Vishnu's discus for stealing a share of the gods' own nectar of immortality; because the nectar had already reached his throat, neither half of him could die, and the body walked on afterward as Ketu, needing no head at all to keep functioning. Gemini's own twins, Castor and Pollux, were conceived by different fathers, and when the mortal Castor died, Pollux asked Zeus to share his own immortality so the two might remain paired in the sky rather than be separated by death. A body that has already achieved a strange, headless permanence entirely on its own meets, in Gemini, two brothers who reached their own permanence only by staying joined together; Ketu in Gemini is read as a fluency with exchange and connection so thoroughly already mastered that, unlike the twins, it no longer needs another party present to keep going.
