Ketu in Capricorn
Ketu, the south lunar node, in tropical Capricorn
What the tradition reads
The jyotish texts give Ketu no exaltation, own sign or mulatrikona in Capricorn, and the tradition reads it there as release set down on ground already mastered rather than a placement carrying any particular dignity of its own. Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign, given by the tradition to structure, patience and the long climb, and Ketu there is read as an old fluency with exactly that discipline, achievement already reached in some earlier telling and now due to be set down rather than pursued all over again. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the south node in Capricorn, drawn from the page pairing it with the north node in Cancer, describes the pattern being released here as a need to feel in control, to take responsibility too seriously, and to be rigid and fearful of ever depending on anyone else. Because the south node marks what is already known rather than what must still be sought, Ketu in Capricorn is read as a discipline that no longer has anything left to prove, ambition spent enough that the climb itself has stopped being the point.
The story
Ketu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, when the demon Svarbhanu was beheaded by Vishnu's discus for stealing a share of the gods' own nectar; because the nectar had already reached his throat, neither half of him could die, and the headless body walked on afterward as Ketu, whole in itself and asking nothing further of the world. Capricorn's oldest known form, among the Babylonians, was already a creature risen from low ground, the goat fish that served there as a symbol of their god Ea. A body that has already had everything it needed, and lost only the part still hungry for more, meets, in Capricorn, a shape whose own myth is one of an old climb from low ground already made and already commemorated; Ketu in Capricorn is read as structure already built and already proven, a climb this placement has, in some sense, already finished making.
