Ketu in Cancer

Ketu, the south lunar node, in tropical Cancer

What the tradition reads

The jyotish texts give Ketu no exaltation, own sign or mulatrikona in Cancer, and the tradition reads it there as release set down on ground already spent rather than a placement carrying any special dignity of its own. Cancer is a cardinal water sign, ruled by the Moon, read by the tradition as the sign of home, feeling and the instinct to nurture and shelter what is one's own. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the south node in Cancer, drawn from the page pairing it with the north node in Capricorn, describes the pattern being released here as an overattachment to childhood and the past, a dependence on others and a reluctance to accept real responsibility for one's own life. Because the south node marks what is already known rather than what must still be sought, Ketu in Cancer is read as an old fluency with home, family and emotional shelter that this life is meant to set down rather than deepen further, comfort already fully tasted and now due to be released so that something more self sufficient can take its place.

The story

Ketu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, when the demon Svarbhanu was beheaded by Vishnu's discus for stealing the gods' own nectar of immortality; because the nectar had already reached his throat, neither half of him could die, and the body walked on afterward as Ketu, complete in itself and needing nothing more from the head it had lost. Cancer's own crab entered the sky as a small casualty of a much larger conflict: it nipped at Heracles's heel of its own accord and was crushed easily underfoot, its one act of small, instinctive protection rewarded anyway afterward with a permanent place in the stars Hera gave it. A body already whole and unkillable on its own meets, in Cancer, a creature whose whole myth was a single small act of instinctive shelter, already given and already spent; Ketu in Cancer is read as that same shelter already provided in some earlier telling, and now something this placement no longer needs to keep offering in order to feel complete.
