Ketu in Aquarius

Ketu, the south lunar node, in tropical Aquarius

What the tradition reads

The jyotish texts give Ketu no exaltation, own sign or mulatrikona in Aquarius, the very sign the classical texts name as Rahu's own; the tradition reads Ketu here as release set down on ground that belongs, by rights, to its opposite appetite rather than to its own settled mastery. Aquarius is a fixed air sign, read by the tradition as detachment, principle and a loyalty to the collective rather than the personal. Cafe Astrology's own reading of the south node in Aquarius, drawn from the page pairing it with the north node in Leo, describes the pattern being released here as a tendency to rely on others who may let a person down, to come across as impersonal or distant in dealing with them, and to lean too heavily on reason and intellect at the expense of real feeling. Because the south node marks what is already known rather than what must be sought, Ketu in Aquarius is read as a fluency with detachment and group belonging that comes almost too easily, mastery already spent rather than a hunger still being worked toward, the very appetite Rahu is read as reaching for from the opposite sign entirely.

The story

Ketu's own story begins at the churning of the ocean of milk, when the demon Svarbhanu was beheaded by Vishnu's discus after stealing a share of the gods' own nectar of immortality; because the nectar had already reached his throat, neither half of him could die, and the headless body walked on afterward as Ketu, complete in itself but permanently apart from the face and appetite that once drove it. Aquarius's own water carrier was, to the Greeks, Ganymede, a mortal boy singled out and carried permanently into the company of the gods to serve them forever after as their cupbearer. A body that has already lost the very feature that wants recognition and belonging meets, in Aquarius, a figure who was given exactly that belonging as a permanent, structured role; Ketu in Aquarius is read as already having done, and let go of, whatever reaching for a place in the group Ganymede's own myth still describes as an honour worth wanting.
