What the tradition reads
Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos does not itself name a detriment, but the label later astrology gives, as Wikipedia's page on essential dignity explains, to the sign directly opposite a planet's own domicile, where a planet is read as weakened rather than at home. Jupiter's domiciles by the Tetrabiblos (houses of the planets, I.20) are Sagittarius and Pisces, and Virgo, opposite Pisces, is accordingly read as Jupiter's detriment, expansion asked to operate on ground built for the opposite work: discrimination, refinement and the correction of detail rather than any wide, generous gesture. Virgo is a mutable earth sign, ruled by Mercury, and the tradition reads it as the sign of practical service and exacting standards. Cafe Astrology's delineation nonetheless credits Jupiter in Virgo with real gifts: an opportunity to develop a perfection for detail, honesty in work and business, co-operation with others, and a desire for practical service in a worthwhile cause, along with considerable literary skill, intelligent technique and technical expertise, work likely to be both highly remunerative and morally satisfying. The tradition names an anxious perfectionism, a growth that second guesses itself into narrowness, as the placement's characteristic cost, though the same exacting standard is credited with a thoroughness that grander, more expansive placements rarely develop.
The story
Virgo's own maiden carries several different names in the old tellings, and the astrological tradition has never fully settled on one. Wikipedia's account of the sign links her most often to Astraea, the goddess associated with justice, who was the last immortal to abandon the earth at the end of the Silver Age when the other gods fled to Olympus, afterward becoming the constellation. A separate telling gives the same figure the name Parthenos, daughter of Staphylus, saved by Apollo after she and her sister threw themselves from a cliff in terror over a broken bottle of wine; rather than raise her into the sky, Apollo set her down in Bubastis, where she was worshipped afterward as a local, earthbound goddess. Jupiter, king of the Olympian gods called Zeus by the Greeks, appears in Virgo's own myths only at the edges, in Parthenos's rescue by his son Apollo rather than by his own hand. Set in the sign of the very last immortal to leave the earth, the god who otherwise rules the whole sky from a comfortable distance is read as having to work, for once, at the ground level Astraea herself refused to abandon: expansion that must justify itself in small, careful, earthly gestures rather than in any sweeping decree.
