Jupiter in tropical Cancer
What the tradition reads
Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos gives Jupiter its exaltation in Cancer (exaltations and their falls, I.22), reading the planet as most northerly and most favourable to fruitful growth in this sign; exaltation is one of the classical dignities the Tetrabiblos names alongside domicile (houses of the planets, I.20), and it marks a planet's natural benefit at its least obstructed. Cancer itself is a cardinal water sign, ruled by the Moon, and the tradition reads it as the sign of home, family, feeling and the instinct to shelter what is one's own. Jupiter there is read as growth applied to exactly that ground: faith and expansion working through the private life before the public one. Cafe Astrology's delineation holds that Jupiter in Cancer draws its best fortune through sympathy, charity, and the powers of saving and accumulating, comforting others along the way, naming real estate and the food industry as prosperous avenues and crediting the placement with a strong belief in a higher power. Where Jupiter in its own signs is said to reach outward toward a wider field, in Cancer the tradition reads the same planet reaching toward safety first, an optimism anchored in a felt sense of belonging, though the same instinct can tip into a generosity that never quite leaves the shelter of home to test itself further out.
The story
Cancer's crab enters the sky, in the Greek telling, as a minor casualty of a much larger labour. Heracles was fighting the many headed Hydra in the swamps of Lerna when Hera sent a crab to nip at his heel and slow him; he crushed it underfoot without much trouble, and Hera, for its service to her, set it among the stars regardless. It is a modest myth about a small creature doing a great goddess's bidding and being rewarded out of proportion to the deed, which makes an apt stage for Jupiter, king of the Olympians, to stand at his most dignified. The Latins, according to Wikipedia's account of Saturn's own mythology, remembered Saturn as Jupiter's predecessor: dethroned and driven out, he arrived in Italy as a fugitive and was rewarded by Janus with a share of the kingdom, ruling there in turn, a far gentler succession than the one the Greeks remembered between Cronus and Zeus. Saturn continued to be honoured in his own temple at the foot of the very hill Jupiter's own cult crowned. Jupiter himself is remembered chiefly as the guardian of public oaths and compacts, the god by whom the Roman consuls swore their office. Set in Cancer, the sign carrying Hera's own act of small protection, the king of the gods is read as turning that oath keeping authority toward shelter, brought close to an actual hearth to guard.
