Venus in the third house

Venus in the third house (Western)

What the tradition reads

The third house, in Alan Leo's summary of the twelve, carries relatives and kindred, travelling, the intellect derived from education and study, and the minor impressions made upon the physical brain; in the chapter he gives it, headed brethren and relatives, short journeys and the mind, he says that there we study all that relates to movement, transition and change, and that it rules all affairs that seriously affect the mind. Venus placed there is read by the tradition as charm carried directly into speech, a diplomatic, tactful way with words that wins people over in conversation as easily as a more visible placement wins them over by appearance. The astrologers read real verbal skill here, a gift for saying exactly the pleasant, persuasive thing a moment calls for, together with a taste for playful conversation and light flattery that most people find easy to enjoy. The tradition's caution is a charm turned into a kind of game, words used to manage or please rather than to speak plainly, and an inconsistency that can leave a listener unsure which version of what was said to actually trust. At its best, the placement is read as a genuinely warm and easy communicator, someone whose words alone are enough to put almost anyone at ease.

The story

Even Aphrodite did not always announce herself plainly. The Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite tells how Zeus made her fall in love with a mortal, the Trojan shepherd Anchises, and rather than approaching him as a goddess she disguised herself as an ordinary mortal woman, and it was only after she had already won him over with her manner and her words that she revealed who she truly was. The courtship itself depended entirely on speech and persuasion carried out under a false, ordinary appearance, charm doing the whole of the work before any grander truth was allowed to show itself. Venus in the third house is read through this same instinct: an identity that wins people over through conversation and manner long before anything more is revealed, trusting that the right words, spoken plainly and warmly enough, can accomplish what a more dramatic announcement never could.
