Venus in the seventh house (Western)
What the tradition reads
The seventh house is described by Alan Leo as the house of relation and the complement of the first, holding unions, marriage and partnerships, individual character and humane tendencies, with all partnerships and unions of every kind shown by it and marriage its chief influence. Venus placed there is read by the tradition as a life genuinely oriented around partnership, someone who finds being alone difficult and who invests real effort into keeping a relationship harmonious once it exists. The astrologers read a strong instinct for compromise and diplomacy within a partnership, together with a real risk of giving up too much of one's own preference simply to preserve the peace. Marriage and formal commitment are read as areas where this placement can genuinely flourish, since its whole temperament is built for exactly this kind of shared life. The tradition's caution is a self that can start to disappear into whatever keeps a partnership smooth, forgetting that a real partnership needs two full people rather than one person quietly managing the other's comfort.
The story
Among Aphrodite's own relationships, her marriage was the most official and, in its way, the least romantic: she was given as wife to Hephaestus, the god of the forge, a bond entered into as a settled arrangement rather than as a love match. It made her, at least on paper, one of the most conventionally married goddesses on Olympus, bound by the same kind of formal tie that governed mortal households. Whatever her feelings toward the arrangement, later famously complicated by her affair with Ares, the marriage itself stood as a real institution, an actual agreement between two gods rather than a fleeting attraction. Venus in the seventh house is read through this same institution: partnership taken seriously as a formal bond in its own right, something entered into and maintained, whatever complications later arrive to test it.
