Venus in the ninth house

Venus in the ninth house (Western)

What the tradition reads

The ninth house is described by Alan Leo as the house of philosophy and the higher mind, given the scientific, philosophic and religious tendencies, long journeys, sea voyages and foreign travel, dreams and what he calls the image making power, with some connection to legal matters on the ground that Jupiter governs it in the natural order of the signs. Venus placed there is read by the tradition as an attraction that reaches naturally toward what is foreign, drawn to people from different cultures or backgrounds and often drawing the same kind of attention in return. The astrologers read a genuine independence in love here, an idealism that wants a relationship to mean something larger than mere comfort, and a real appetite for the adventure of an unfamiliar place or an unfamiliar way of living. The tradition's caution is an idealism so committed to the idea of a partner or a place that the ordinary, unglamorous reality of either can come as a disappointment once the initial excitement wears off. At its best, the placement is read as a love genuinely widened by distance and difference rather than narrowed by familiarity alone.

The story

Aphrodite herself was never fully at home in any one place. She was called Cypris after Cyprus and Cytherea after Cythera, the island in one telling where she first rose from the sea, each name marking her as a goddess whose very identity was tied to a specific, foreign shore rather than to Olympus itself. Cult and myth alike carried her back and forth across the eastern Mediterranean, a goddess whose origin was always slightly elsewhere, wherever a worshipper happened to be standing. It gave her devotion an unusually international character from the very start, an identity built out of distant islands and foreign coastlines rather than out of any single native ground. Venus in the ninth house is read through this same far-travelling identity: an attraction and an affection that were never really meant to stay in one place, most itself precisely when it has gone some real distance from home.
