Venus in the fourth house

Venus in the fourth house (Western)

What the tradition reads

The fourth house, in Alan Leo's summary of the twelve, carries hereditary tendencies, home and domestic life, parentage, environment and the general state of things at the close of life, and in the same summary the hidden and secret matters bound up with parentage or domestic affairs; in the chapter he gives it he adds the residence and family conditions a person dwells in, and calls it the personal environment against the tenth house's individual environment. Venus placed there is read by the tradition as love and value turned toward exactly that ground: a wish for balance, beauty and peace within the home, a sentimental attachment to family and to the place a person comes from, and often a genuine gift for making a household feel warm and cared for. The astrologers read a nurturing instinct here that can tip into over-attachment, a wish to hold onto a family or a home exactly as it was rather than letting it change, and note that early experience of a parent's own relationships tends to shape the pattern this placement later looks for in its own. The tradition names idealising the family or one's origins as the placement's ordinary caution, hoping a home is more harmonious than it may actually be, though the same tenderness is credited, when the ground is good, with a household genuinely worth the devotion given to it.

The story

Aphrodite was not only a goddess of romance but, by Roman reckoning, an ancestress. Her son by the mortal Trojan prince Anchises was Aeneas, who had to carry his own lame father out of burning Troy and eventually settled in Italy, where he became, in the Roman telling, a progenitor of the Roman people. The Julian family of Rome, Julius Caesar and Augustus among them, traced their own lineage back through Aeneas's son Ascanius, a household claiming descent, quite literally, from the goddess of love herself. It is a myth about a home built from an act of devotion that survives a burning city, carried to entirely new ground and made to last for generations afterward. Venus in the fourth house is read through this same figure: love as the actual founding material of a lineage, not a fleeting attraction but a home worth saving first and building again once it is safe.
