Venus in the fifth house
Venus in the fifth house (Western)
What the tradition reads
The fifth house, in Alan Leo's summary of the twelve, carries offspring, the sensations and pleasurable emotions arising from the senses, and worldly enterprise and energy; in the chapter he gives it he relates it to pleasure, society and the emotions and feelings, to a person's love affairs and courtships, and to speculative affairs and matters of enterprise prompted by the desire nature. Venus placed there is read by the tradition as a genuinely romantic nature, playful, sensual and warm, someone who is, in the plainest sense, in love with love itself and takes real pleasure in courtship, flirtation and the ordinary pursuit of a good time. The astrologers read a loyal, demonstrative style once affection has actually settled on someone, together with a taste for entertainment, art and any creative outlet that lets this warmth find a form. The tradition's caution is a devotion so total that its object can, at times, matter less than the feeling of being in love itself, an intensity that can burn brightly and then move on once the earliest thrill of a romance has faded.
The story
Aphrodite's devotion to the beautiful mortal Adonis was as consuming as any love the myths give her. He was a favourite companion, admired above nearly anyone else she took an interest in, until one day, while out hunting, he was gored by a wild boar and bled to death in her own arms before she could do anything to save him. Different tellings blame different gods for sending the boar, but every version agrees on Aphrodite's grief afterward, a mourning so public that it gave rise to an annual festival and to flowers forever associated with that loss. It is one of the few myths where Aphrodite's love is shown costing her something real rather than simply being granted or withheld at will. Venus in the fifth house is read through this same full-hearted devotion: a capacity to love with genuine, undefended delight, and to feel a loss just as fully when a happiness this bright is taken away too soon.
