Uranus in the eleventh house

Uranus in the eleventh house (Western)

What the tradition reads

The eleventh house is described by Alan Leo as the house of friends, acquaintances, hopes, wishes and aspirations, which, taken alone and free from affliction, he counts a benefic house inclined toward good fortune, pleasure and happiness, and which has sympathy with the tenth in the charts of those concerned with the many rather than the few. Uranus placed there is read by the tradition as friendship and community approached in a genuinely unconventional way, drawn to unusual people and causes judged on their present and future merit rather than on tradition or sentiment alone. The astrologers read a strong aversion to feeling confined or tied down by any group, alongside a real, deep belief in openness, free thinking and the power of new ideas to actually change things for the better. A detached quality is named as characteristic, one that keeps friendships fresh and largely free of lingering grudges, together with a genuine talent for recognising and encouraging what is original in other people. The tradition credits Uranus here with hopes and causes that are themselves highly original, a belief in individual freedom that somehow coexists with real faith in what a group, aligned around a shared and worthwhile cause, can accomplish together. Its caution is a restlessness with ordinary belonging, an instinct to keep every social tie a little looser than it might otherwise need to be.

The story

Uranus's myth mostly recedes into the background after his own overthrow, but one later image puts him back into active company with the rest of the gods: on the Gigantomachy frieze of the Pergamon Altar, Uranus is shown bearded and winged, fighting against the Giants with a sword, positioned not far from his own daughter Themis, who is shown attacking a different giant nearby. It is a rare depiction of Uranus taking part in a shared cause alongside an entire community of gods rather than acting, or being acted upon, alone, joining a collective defence that spans multiple generations of the same divine family at once. Uranus in the eleventh house is read through this same picture, an old, largely private or withdrawn figure who nonetheless shows up, when the cause is significant enough, standing together with others toward a single shared goal, contribution measured less by constant, everyday involvement than by showing up, fully committed, exactly when a collective effort actually needs it.
