the Sun in the seventh house (Western)
What the tradition reads
The seventh house is described by Alan Leo as the house of relation and the complement of the first, holding unions, marriage and partnerships, individual character and humane tendencies, with all partnerships and unions of every kind shown by it and marriage its chief influence. The Sun placed there is read by the tradition as an identity that only feels complete once it is set beside another, pride taken in negotiation and in the harmony a person can establish with a partner, and a genuine talent for the charm and diplomacy that draws capable, well matched people close. The astrologers read this placement as unusually successful in formal dealings of every kind, from marriage to legal contract, and drawn instinctively to partners strong enough to be treated as equals rather than followers. The tradition's caution is an identity too willing to be defined entirely by the other party in an agreement, giving up its own needs and judgement to keep a partnership harmonious, and a Sun that can lose track of itself in the very negotiations it is so gifted at conducting.
The story
Because Helios saw everything that happened beneath his daily path across the sky, no other god was called on so often to stand as witness when an oath needed keeping. Mortals swore some of their most binding promises by Helios's own name, trusting that a god who could see the whole world at once would also see any promise broken in secret, since his position as the sun made him, in the tradition's own words, an all seeing witness. It gave Helios an unusual second role beyond simply driving the chariot: he became, in effect, a permanent party to every serious agreement made under his own light, a witness whose presence made an oath harder to walk away from. The seventh house's whole business, the binding agreement entered into with another, finds in Helios a fitting patron for exactly this reason. The Sun in the seventh house is read through that same office: an identity that lends its own visibility to whatever partnership or contract it enters, making the bargain more solemn and more difficult to break simply by being so plainly present within it.
