Rahu in the third house
Rahu, the north lunar node, in the third house (Western)
What the tradition reads
The third house, in Alan Leo's summary of the twelve, carries relatives and kindred, travelling, the intellect derived from education and study, and the minor impressions made upon the physical brain; in the chapter he gives it, headed brethren and relatives, short journeys and the mind, he says that there we study all that relates to movement, transition and change, and that it rules all affairs that seriously affect the mind. Rahu, the north node, placed there, with the south node set in the opposite ninth house of belief and philosophy, is read by the tradition as growth aimed at exactly that ordinary, daily exchange. Cafe Astrology's reading of the placement names the old pattern being left behind as a habit of holding beliefs too rigidly and defending them without first gathering the facts, and asks instead for the slower, more attentive work of actually listening, communicating clearly, and staying sensitive to the small social graces and networks that this house governs. In the Vedic tradition, Rahu's usual pull toward whatever is unfamiliar and exaggerated is read here as landing on speech and thought themselves, producing an unconventional, sometimes restless intelligence and a gift for communication that can tip into scattered nervous energy if it is not grounded. What is asked of a third house Rahu, on either reading, is patience with the ordinary and the near at hand, learning that real growth here comes from listening as much as from being heard.
The story
Rahu's whole story begins as an act of communication gone wrong: at the churning of the ocean of milk, Vishnu took the form of the enchantress Mohini to distribute the newly won nectar of immortality among the devas, and the demon Svarbhanu simply sat down among them, unannounced, in the row of gods, and let the nectar be poured for him as though he belonged there. It worked only because no one immediately spoke up. It was Surya, the Sun, and Chandra, the Moon, sitting near enough to notice, who recognised the deception and told Mohini what her own eyes had missed, prompting Vishnu's discus to take the impostor's head before the drink had finished doing its work. The third house governs exactly this kind of near exchange, what passes, unremarked or remarked, between the people sitting closest to us. Rahu in the third house is read through this same scene: a communicator who can pass unnoticed in a room until the sharpest, closest observers catch what is actually being said, its whole nature shaped by the moment a disguise, however convincing, was finally seen through by a near neighbour rather than a stranger.
