Rahu in the eighth house
Rahu, the north lunar node, in the eighth house (Western)
What the tradition reads
The eighth house is described by Alan Leo as the house of death and of all matters connected with dissolution, holding legacies, the goods of the dead and executorships, counted an occult house for its relation to the fourth, and set in the watery triangle with the fourth and the twelfth, a house of regeneration as much as of ending. Rahu, the north node, placed there, with the south node set in the opposite second house of personal possession, is read by the tradition as growth aimed at exactly that shared, more exposed territory. Cafe Astrology's reading of the placement names the old pattern being released as an attachment to material security and control held alone, and asks instead for genuine transformation, intimacy and vulnerability, reached only through actually sharing resources and trust with another person rather than keeping them separately guarded. In the Vedic tradition, Rahu's usual intensity is read here as landing on crisis, sexuality and the occult, an appetite for whatever lies at the far edge of ordinary experience. What is asked of an eighth house Rahu, on either reading, is learning that real security in this house comes only from a bond actually shared, not from resources or intensity held back and kept entirely to oneself.
The story
The single detail that makes Rahu's story genuinely strange among beheading myths is what the nectar had already done before the discus fell: Svarbhanu had swallowed a portion of the gods' own amrita, the elixir of immortality, and once it had passed his throat, no weapon could actually end him, only divide him. Vishnu's discus took the head, which lived on as Rahu, and the body, which lived on separately as Ketu, each half continuing to act on its own though neither was, in the ordinary sense, alive in one piece any longer. It is a death that transformed rather than concluded, a border crossed and then, in effect, un-crossed. The eighth house is the house of exactly this kind of border, the transformative edge between one state and another, between dissolution and whatever is raised again out of it. Rahu in the eighth house is read through this same unfinished death, an intensity that has already been through the most extreme transformation a myth can offer and come out the other side still reaching, still wanting, still very much in motion.
