Neptune in the fifth house
Neptune in the fifth house (Western)
What the tradition reads
The fifth house, in Alan Leo's summary of the twelve, carries offspring, the sensations and pleasurable emotions arising from the senses, and worldly enterprise and energy; in the chapter he gives it he relates it to pleasure, society and the emotions and feelings, to a person's love affairs and courtships, and to speculative affairs and matters of enterprise prompted by the desire nature. Neptune placed there is read by the tradition as imagination given a direct and dramatic outlet, a strong pull toward art, performance and any form of expression that lets real feeling show through vividly. The astrologers read a love life coloured heavily by fantasy, an idealisation of romantic partners that can drift some distance from who they actually are, and a deep need for appreciation on both romantic and creative levels. An attraction to partners who seem to need saving, or who turn out to be distant, noncommittal or otherwise hard to fully reach, is named as a recurring pattern when the placement is not well supported. The tradition also reads a genuine gift for teaching or caring for others creatively, particularly where real sensitivity is called for. What the placement is credited with, at its best, is real artistic or dramatic talent and a capacity for love that gives generously; its caution is keeping romantic and creative ideals high while learning not to expect an ordinary person to embody a wholly imagined one.
The story
An Etruscan mirror now in the Vatican Museums shows Neptune, under his Etruscan name Nethuns, together with Amymone, daughter of Danaus: the god saves her from an assault by a satyr and then teaches her the art of creating springs. It is an unusual myth to survive in such a specific, visual form, a story of rescue immediately followed by an act of shared creativity rather than one alone, the god passing on a genuine skill to the very person he had just protected. Other Etruscan depictions show Nethuns performing the same kind of creative act on his own, striking the ground or kicking a rock and calling a spring into being with the gesture. Neptune in the fifth house is read through this same double image, romance and rescue that becomes something generative rather than simply protective, and a creative gift understood as worth actively teaching to someone else rather than kept only for oneself, art and affection treated, in this telling, as the same instinct working in two directions at once.
