What the tradition reads
The seventh house is described by Alan Leo as the house of relation and the complement of the first, holding unions, marriage and partnerships, individual character and humane tendencies, with all partnerships and unions of every kind shown by it and marriage its chief influence. The Moon placed there is read by the tradition as an emotional life that genuinely needs a companion, drawn strongly to partnership as a source of the support and security it does not easily supply for itself. The astrologers read this placement as adaptable and likeable within a relationship, often discovering feelings through a partner that might otherwise have stayed unnoticed, though a fear of being alone can push the placement to move from one relationship to the next rather than sit with an uncertain patch on its own. Women in a person's life, in particular, are read as carrying unusual emotional weight for this placement, shaping its sense of security in ways a more independent placement would not experience. The tradition's caution is a dependency that leans too heavily on a partner to provide an emotional steadiness that has to be built, at least in part, from within, and a self that can lose its own shape when it is not currently attached to someone else's.
The story
Selene's own private devotion to Endymion was not the only night she is remembered for lengthening. When Zeus wanted an unusually long night in which to visit the mortal woman Alcmene and father Heracles on her, he arranged, through Hermes as his messenger, for that single night to run three times its ordinary length, and Selene is named among the parties whose cooperation the extended darkness required. It is a myth in which Selene's own domain, the night itself, is borrowed and extended for the sake of someone else's union rather than her own, a favour granted so that another pairing could be completed in full. The arrangement runs through an intermediary, Hermes carrying the request between Zeus and the powers of the night, much as any formal negotiation runs through a third party rather than being settled directly between the two people it actually concerns. The Moon in the seventh house is read through this same willingness to bend around another's needs in service of a partnership: an emotional life capable of extending itself, sometimes considerably, so that someone else's bond can be completed.
