Mercury in the twelfth house (Western)
What the tradition reads
The twelfth house is described by Alan Leo as the house of confinement, of occultism and of physical self-undoing, the most critical of the twelve and the house of the voluntary recluse as well as of the prisoner. Mercury placed there is read by the tradition as a mind slower to speak or communicate outwardly than most, particularly in childhood, its real thinking often happening well before, or instead of, anything actually being said aloud. The astrologers read this placement as an excellent keeper of other people's confidences, trusted with secrets partly because it is already so practised at holding its own thoughts privately. A tendency toward overanalysis is named as a real cost here, along with real difficulty acting on instinct when a situation calls for a quick, unreasoned response rather than a considered one. The placement is drawn instead to symbol, sentiment and imagery, learning best through what can be felt or pictured rather than through anything spelled out directly in words, which can make plain, direct communication with other people a genuine and lasting challenge. What the placement holds, at its best, is a mind unusually rich in the kind of private understanding that never quite finds its way fully into speech.
The story
Ovid records that Mercury carried Morpheus's dreams from the valley of Somnus, the god of sleep, out to the sleeping minds of mortals scattered across the world, delivering a message that arrived as an image rather than as a spoken word, understood by the dreamer without a single sentence ever being uttered aloud. It is one of the quietest tasks ever given to a god otherwise defined by talk, trade and quick argument, an errand carried out entirely in silence, in darkness, and inside minds that were not even awake to hear it arrive. No dreamer ever saw Mercury making the delivery, and no words passed between messenger and receiver at all, the whole exchange happening below the level of anything that could be spoken or consciously noticed. Mercury in the twelfth house is read through this same silent, symbolic errand: a mind that continues to communicate even here, in the house built for concealment, only through image and impression rather than through speech, doing its most essential work while everyone else, dreamer included, is fast asleep.
