Mercury in the ninth house

Mercury in the ninth house (Western)

What the tradition reads

The ninth house is described by Alan Leo as the house of philosophy and the higher mind, given the scientific, philosophic and religious tendencies, long journeys, sea voyages and foreign travel, dreams and what he calls the image making power, with some connection to legal matters on the ground that Jupiter governs it in the natural order of the signs. Mercury placed there is read by the tradition as an eternally curious mind with a genuine hunger for knowledge, studying not because it has to but because it wants to, and taking real pleasure in exchanging philosophical ideas with anyone willing to think them through together. The astrologers read an enthusiastic, big picture communicator here, quick to grasp the larger shape of a subject even when the smaller details along the way get less attention than they deserve, occasionally offering advice a little too hastily as a result. Teaching and sharing what has been learned are read as some of the placement's deepest pleasures, an identity that grows through inspiring other people's curiosity rather than only satisfying its own. The tradition's caution is a mind so taken with the large idea that the practical particulars needed to actually apply it can be skipped over, leaving behind an inspiring but occasionally impractical piece of advice.

The story

In Virgil's Aeneid, Mercury is the one who reminds Aeneas of his mission to found the city of Rome, a single errand that carries genuine philosophical weight rather than any ordinary piece of news. The god elsewhere associated with haggling over cattle and coins is here entrusted instead with a reminder about a purpose reaching well beyond any single stop along a journey, proof that his gift for communication could carry the largest kind of meaning as easily as the smallest. Mercury in the ninth house is read through this same larger reach: a mind whose talent for exchange and travel ultimately serves an understanding, and a journey, considerably bigger than any one immediate errand.
