Mars in the seventh house (Western)
What the tradition reads
The seventh house is described by Alan Leo as the house of relation and the complement of the first, holding unions, marriage and partnerships, individual character and humane tendencies, with all partnerships and unions of every kind shown by it and marriage its chief influence. Mars placed there is read by the tradition as a partnership charged with real physical and emotional energy, a person drawn to partners who are themselves assertive, sometimes discovering their own directness only once a strong partner has drawn it out of them. The astrologers read a genuinely impulsive streak in close relationships, a need for real passion and intensity rather than a calm, even-tempered arrangement, and, put to better use, a real talent for mediation, negotiation and debate carried out on a partner's behalf. The tradition's caution is a relationship that can become a contest in its own right, two strong wills testing each other as readily as supporting one another. At its best, the placement is credited with a partnership that stays genuinely alive, neither party ever quite settling into simple routine.
The story
Where Greek storytellers made much of Ares and Aphrodite's affair as a scandal to be exposed and laughed at, Roman writers largely told the same pairing differently, treating Mars and Venus as an attractive, settled couple and sometimes suggesting the two were properly married rather than merely caught together in secret. It gave Rome's own war god a stable, publicly acceptable partnership with the goddess of love, force paired openly with charm rather than hidden away from a jealous husband. The two were shown together often enough in Roman art that their pairing came to stand for something admired rather than something scandalous, passion given a respectable, lasting form. Mars in the seventh house is read through this same steadier partnership: intensity that does not need scandal or secrecy to sustain itself, a real and lasting bond built between two strong, well matched temperaments.
