Mars in the first house (Western)

What the tradition reads

The first house, in Alan Leo's summary of the twelve, carries the personality, the natural disposition and the worldly outlook generally, with the physical experiences obtained through the five senses; he calls it the quality of the life forces, the material brought to the front, and in the chapter he gives it he says the ascendant rules the personal appearance and, to a considerable extent, the health, mind and disposition. Mars placed there is read by the tradition as a commanding, energetic presence, active and dynamic in manner, someone who reacts to a new situation immediately rather than waiting to be prompted into it. The astrologers read a fiercely independent, direct and straightforward temperament here, enthusiastic at the start of nearly any undertaking, physically engaged with life and genuinely competitive in almost any contest it enters. The tradition's caution is an enthusiasm that burns brightest at the beginning and can struggle to see a long project through once the initial excitement has worn off, together with an impatience that reads, to slower temperaments, as abruptness. What the placement is credited with, at its best, is an identity that meets the world head on, spontaneous, physically confident and entirely unafraid to go first.

The story

Mars was shown in more than one guise depending on who was picturing him: sometimes bearded and mature, sometimes young and clean-shaven, but almost always nude or seminude and carrying the plain, immediate symbols of war, a spear or a shield close at hand regardless of his age. Even at his most peaceful, on the Altar of Peace itself, he is shown holding a spear garlanded in laurel, a peace explicitly won by military victory rather than simply granted. There was no version of Mars that appeared unready or unarmed, no softer image kept in reserve for a gentler occasion; his whole visual identity announced readiness before anything else about him needed explaining. Mars in the first house is read through this same immediate presentation: an identity that shows up already prepared to act, carrying its readiness openly rather than keeping it in reserve until it is actually called for.
