Mars in the fifth house
Mars in the fifth house (Western)
What the tradition reads
The fifth house, in Alan Leo's summary of the twelve, carries offspring, the sensations and pleasurable emotions arising from the senses, and worldly enterprise and energy; in the chapter he gives it he relates it to pleasure, society and the emotions and feelings, to a person's love affairs and courtships, and to speculative affairs and matters of enterprise prompted by the desire nature. Mars placed there is read by the tradition as a strong love of pleasure pursued actively rather than passively, romance chased with real energy and directness once someone has caught this placement's interest. The astrologers read a genuine attraction to sport, competition and any entertainment with an edge of real risk to it, a playful, demonstrative manner in courtship, and a competitiveness that turns even a game meant purely for fun into something worth actually winning. Children of this placement, the tradition notes, tend to be especially active and hard to tire out. The tradition's caution is an impulsiveness in romance that moves faster than the feelings behind it can properly be tested, and a restlessness that needs a genuine outlet, physical or creative, or risks turning into simple irritability instead.
The story
Twice each spring, on the twenty-seventh of February and again on the fourteenth of March, Rome held the Equirria in Mars's honour, days set aside specifically for chariot and horse races run in his name. It was pure competitive spectacle, speed and skill on open display rather than any solemn or bloody rite, timed deliberately to the start of the season when both farming and campaigning were about to begin again after winter. The races gave the god of war a festival built entirely around play, contest for its own sake rather than for any actual conquest, a chance for the whole city to enjoy exactly the kind of competitive thrill Mars himself was thought to embody. Mars in the fifth house is read through this same spirited contest: energy channelled into genuine sport and play, competitive drive given a safe, enjoyable outlet rather than a battlefield to spend itself on.
