Mars in the eighth house

Mars in the eighth house (Western)

What the tradition reads

The eighth house is described by Alan Leo as the house of death and of all matters connected with dissolution, holding legacies, the goods of the dead and executorships, counted an occult house for its relation to the fourth, and set in the watery triangle with the fourth and the twelfth, a house of regeneration as much as of ending. Mars placed there is read by the tradition as a desire nature with real intensity underneath it, sometimes slow to fully awaken but powerful once it genuinely does, and shadowed by real fears of betrayal or loss that can make trust difficult to extend fully. The astrologers read a formidable capacity for research, investigation or psychological insight here, energy that works best applied to whatever lies beneath a situation's surface rather than to what is already plainly visible. Guilt, fear or a sense of doom are named as the placement's real obstacles, feelings that must be worked through rather than around before its considerable intuition and drive can be used freely. At its best, the placement is credited with a passion genuinely transformed by having survived something difficult, rather than one that arrived easily and unearned.

The story

Among all the animals sacrificed to Roman gods, only one horse sacrifice is known to have existed in the entire calendar, the October Horse, offered to Mars each October at the close of the campaigning season. The right-hand horse of a winning chariot team was killed, and its head and tail were fought over and carried off as trophies by rival parts of the city, blood from the tail rushed across Rome to reach the King's Hearth before it dried. It was a single, intense, once-yearly rite unlike anything else in Mars's calendar, transformation and violence bound together in one deliberate, ritual act rather than spread across the ordinary run of the year. Mars in the eighth house is read through this same singular intensity: a force that does not spend itself in small, constant amounts but concentrates instead into rare, transformative moments that matter disproportionately once they finally arrive.
