Ketu in the third house

Ketu, the south lunar node, in the third house (Western)

What the tradition reads

The third house, in Alan Leo's summary of the twelve, carries relatives and kindred, travelling, the intellect derived from education and study, and the minor impressions made upon the physical brain; in the chapter he gives it, headed brethren and relatives, short journeys and the mind, he says that there we study all that relates to movement, transition and change, and that it rules all affairs that seriously affect the mind. Ketu, the south node, placed there, paired in Cafe Astrology's reading with a north node in the opposite ninth house of belief and philosophy, is read by the tradition as an old, already practised fluency with exactly that near, factual territory: a mind fluent in logic, detail and mental analysis, the south node's house read as ground already mastered rather than still being learned. The astrologers read a third house Ketu as someone who can gather and process ordinary information with real, almost instinctive ease, and who is asked, over the same lifetime, to move beyond that reliance on mental over-stimulation and logic in favour of the ninth house's harder, less provable territory of faith and broader understanding. In the Vedic tradition, Ketu's usual detachment is read here as already at work on communication itself, a fluency that can shade into restlessness or a scattered, undirected cleverness if it is not given some larger belief to actually serve.

The story

It was the head, not the body, that did Rahu's talking: Svarbhanu's whole deception at the churning of the ocean depended on sitting silently in the row of gods and letting the disguise itself communicate what he did not dare say aloud, until Surya and Chandra spoke up and undid it. Once Vishnu's discus separated the two halves, the head kept that same drive to be heard and went on using it, ambitious and still reaching, while the body, becoming Ketu, kept none of it, left to act without the single part that had done all the talking and all the pretending. The third house governs exactly this kind of daily exchange, communication, the near and the immediate. Ketu in the third house is read through this same silence: a fluency with the mechanics of ordinary exchange that no longer needs to explain or account for itself at length, having, in this telling, already used up its share of speaking through the half of the story that kept the head.
