Ketu in the tenth house

Ketu, the south lunar node, in the tenth house (Western)

What the tradition reads

The tenth house, the Mid-Heaven, is described by Alan Leo as the house of honour, reputation, profession, business or occupation, representing the public standing or worldly position of the native, and as the apex of the horoscope, the portion thrust out most prominently into the busy life of the world. Ketu, the south node, placed there, paired in Cafe Astrology's reading with a north node in the opposite fourth house of home and family, is read by the tradition as an old, deeply practised fluency with exactly that public, achievement-driven territory, a comfort with control, ambition and being measured by results that the placement already knows so well it can lean on professional standing rather than risk the more private vulnerability of family life. The astrologers read a tenth house Ketu as someone who can build a public reputation with real, almost automatic competence, and who is asked, over the same lifetime, to move that same capacity toward the fourth house's quieter, less visible work of home, family and emotional foundation. In the Vedic tradition, Ketu's usual detachment is read here as already at work on ambition itself, a public standing that can start to feel hollow once the placement notices how little of its own private, family life has been given the same attention.

The story

When Rahu and Ketu were both granted lasting standing among the planets, the two halves did not receive equal fame for the act that earned it. It was the head, ambitious and still reaching, that is remembered as the one who wanted a place among the gods and tried to take it; the body, becoming Ketu, was present for the same theft and bore the same discus, yet carries none of the credit, or the blame, usually attached to the deed, remembered mainly as what remained rather than as the one who acted. Both, still, hold the same formal rank today, worshipped and accounted for equally within the tradition despite that difference in how the story tells it. The tenth house is the house of exactly this kind of public standing, reputation and the credit a person is given before the world. Ketu in the tenth house is read through this same quiet position: a standing that is real and fully held, even though the placement itself rarely claims, or needs, the visible recognition that usually comes attached to it.
