Ketu in the eleventh house
Ketu, the south lunar node, in the eleventh house (Western)
What the tradition reads
The eleventh house is described by Alan Leo as the house of friends, acquaintances, hopes, wishes and aspirations, which, taken alone and free from affliction, he counts a benefic house inclined toward good fortune, pleasure and happiness, and which has sympathy with the tenth in the charts of those concerned with the many rather than the few. Ketu, the south node, placed there, paired in Cafe Astrology's reading with a north node in the opposite fifth house of personal creativity and romance, is read by the tradition as an old, deeply practised fluency with exactly that collective territory, a comfort with groups, causes and abstract principle that the placement already knows so thoroughly it can hide behind reason and shared ideals rather than risk anything as exposed as personal feeling. The astrologers read an eleventh house Ketu as someone who already belongs easily to groups and networks, contributing with real, practised ease, and who is asked, over the same lifetime, to move that same capacity toward the fifth house's warmer, more personal territory of individual creativity and romance. In the Vedic tradition, Ketu's usual detachment is read here as already at work inside belonging itself, ease within a group that can shade into distance from one's own, more particular feelings if it is never balanced by something entirely personal.
The story
Of the two halves born from Svarbhanu's fall, Rahu is the one usually named first and remembered most vividly, the ambitious head still chasing the Sun and Moon across the sky. Ketu is spoken of far more quietly, and typically only alongside Rahu rather than on its own, a member of the same planetary company known chiefly through its counterpart's more dramatic story rather than through any comparable myth of its own. It belongs fully to the group of planets that the tradition eventually recognised, holding the same rank and the same influence, yet remains, within that group, the less discussed, less individually storied member. The eleventh house is the house of exactly this kind of group membership, belonging that does not always require individual distinction to be real. Ketu in the eleventh house is read through this same quieter standing: a genuine, fully held place within whatever group it belongs to, contributed to steadily rather than loudly, and valued, on this reading, for a kind of belonging that never actually needed to be the most visible member of the company to matter within it.
