Jupiter in the third house

Jupiter in the third house (Western)

What the tradition reads

The third house, in Alan Leo's summary of the twelve, carries relatives and kindred, travelling, the intellect derived from education and study, and the minor impressions made upon the physical brain; in the chapter he gives it, headed brethren and relatives, short journeys and the mind, he says that there we study all that relates to movement, transition and change, and that it rules all affairs that seriously affect the mind. Jupiter placed there is read by the tradition as a forward-looking, genuinely curious mind, a real planner who enjoys making happy, easy connections with the people immediately around them. The astrologers read an optimism about learning and conversation here, ideas exchanged generously and without much anxiety, and a sibling relationship, where one exists, that is read as an unusually warm and expansive influence across a life. The tradition's caution is a planning instinct so hopeful that it can skip past the more tedious, practical steps a plan actually needs to succeed. At its best, the placement is credited with a genuine gift for making everyday exchange feel bigger and more promising than it might otherwise have seemed.

The story

Jupiter did not stand alone in his own family. The god was one among several siblings, Vesta, Ceres, Juno, Pluto and Neptune. It made the family itself a kind of working council from the very start, each sibling's own department feeding into the larger order the family as a whole maintained together. Jupiter's own supremacy among them was real, but it existed alongside, not instead of, a full set of siblings each doing serious, necessary work in their own right. Jupiter in the third house is read through this same siblingship: an identity genuinely shaped and enlarged by the people nearest to it, a family or a circle whose separate strengths, taken together, made the whole arrangement considerably bigger than any one member alone.
