Jupiter in the sixth house

Jupiter in the sixth house (Western)

What the tradition reads

The sixth house, in Alan Leo's summary of the twelve, carries service and the attachments arising from the expression of the tenth house, denotes sickness arising from worry and anxiety, and is named there the house of employment; in the chapter he gives it he says it relates to work and servants, to sickness, and to the condition of the physical body. Jupiter placed there is read by the tradition as high standards brought to the ordinary business of daily dealings, a genuine belief that other people should be treated with respect and good faith even in the smallest, most routine exchange. The astrologers read a steadiness in daily service here that other placements of Jupiter, more given to grand gestures, do not always share, growth arriving through consistent, principled conduct rather than through any single dramatic act. Because the sixth is traditionally a house of the body as well as of labour, Jupiter there is also read as a constitution that generally recovers well, provided the daily routine it depends on is actually respected rather than neglected.

The story

Jupiter's own chief priest, the Flamen Dialis, held one of the most demanding daily offices in the whole of Roman religion, a position reserved for patricians alone and bound to an entire life organised around the unbroken, careful service of the god. The office was not something taken up occasionally or set aside when convenient; it required a standard of daily conduct kept up without exception for as long as the priesthood lasted. Jupiter, whose own myths favour sweeping, decisive action, was in this one office served instead by a life built entirely around quiet, exacting daily discipline. Jupiter in the sixth house is read through this same demanding routine: growth and standing earned through consistent, principled daily service rather than through any single grand or dramatic gesture, a discipline maintained precisely because it is expected every single day rather than only when it is convenient.
