Jupiter in the fourth house

Jupiter in the fourth house (Western)

What the tradition reads

The fourth house, in Alan Leo's summary of the twelve, carries hereditary tendencies, home and domestic life, parentage, environment and the general state of things at the close of life, the department Lilly's Christian Astrology also reads as the end of a matter as much as its beginning; in the chapter he gives it Leo adds the residence and family conditions a person dwells in, and calls it the personal environment against the tenth house's individual environment. Jupiter placed there is read by the tradition as faith and growth brought to bear on exactly that ground, strong instincts that guide a person toward securing their own foundation, and a warmth that makes the household itself a place other people are readily drawn into. Where the planet stands with others in the same house, the astrologers read a concentration of a person's force at the base of the life, an expansion that starts at home and is built outward from it. What the tradition credits the placement with, when it is well supported, is a home that holds firm precisely when it is tested, a foundation that does not give way simply because circumstances have turned difficult.

The story

Jupiter Stator, the title meaning roughly the one who makes to stand, was first invoked, according to tradition, by Romulus himself during a desperate battle with the Sabines, when the Roman line was breaking and about to flee the field entirely. Romulus prayed to Jupiter for help at that exact moment, and the army held its ground rather than scattering, a turn credited afterward to the god rather than to any general's skill alone. Centuries later a consul, Marcus Atilius Regulus, invoked the same title again, vowing a temple to Jupiter Stator specifically so that the god would stop the rout of the Roman army in its own moment of crisis. Jupiter in the fourth house is read through this same steadying office: a foundation that holds when everything around it is genuinely at risk of breaking, ground that does not give way simply because the moment has turned frightening.
