The north node (Rahu) in the seventh house
the north lunar node in the seventh Western house, read in the Western evolutionary tradition, and the Vedic tradition's reading of Rahu in the bhava of the same number
What the tradition reads
With the north node in the seventh house, Cafe Astrology's own reading of the placement sets the south node in the first, and describes a habit of relying on the self so heavily that important others are alienated, of being competitive to the point of a me first attitude, and of acting on personal impulse rather than pausing to consider another point of view. Growth, by this reading, lies in the seventh house's own territory: sensitising oneself to what a partner actually needs, learning tact and genuine cooperation, and letting go of a self consciousness so overwhelming that it blocks the very desire to win. This Vedic reading is of Rahu in the seventh bhava, not the Western house above: a chart's bhava number and its Western house number often differ, so a reader stands in this bhava only where the chart's own bhava number says so. Rahu in that bhava, the house of marriage and open partnership, is read as magnifying whatever the house governs past its usual proportion, producing an unconventional or foreign partner, a partnership formed under unusual circumstances, or an intense, sometimes obsessive focus on relationship itself. Classical sources read a well supported Rahu here as capable of a genuinely unusual and fortunate union, while a poorly supported one is read as bringing instability or deception in partnership, and the tradition's remedial measures are prescribed accordingly.
The story
The seventh house is one of the four angles, which Alan Leo also calls the cardinal houses and which he says show all things that must be expressed outwardly, the physical matters connected with the external life; from each of these angles, he holds, the other houses receive their value, the cardinal points denoting the root of the life to be expressed. A node placed there is read as unusually load bearing rather than a quiet background influence: whatever theme the node carries is read directly into how a person meets and is met by others. The Western evolutionary astrology tradition pairs the seventh house consistently with the first across from it, reading the two as one axis running from the self alone to the self in partnership, and treats a node on this axis as a lesson in learning that cooperation, not self reliance, is the harder and more rewarding skill. Leo calls the seventh the house of relation, in which all partnerships and unions of every kind are shown, and the complement of the first, the unifying of all that is separated or isolated in the ascendant, so a node here is read in company rather than alone.
