The north node (Rahu) in the fourth house

the north lunar node in the fourth Western house, read in the Western evolutionary tradition, and the Vedic tradition's reading of Rahu in the bhava of the same number

What the tradition reads

With the north node in the fourth house, Cafe Astrology's own reading of the placement sets the south node in the tenth, and describes a habit of needing to be in control, of taking public responsibility so seriously that it becomes rigid, and of fearing dependence on others so much that home and family are quietly neglected in favour of achievement. Growth, by this reading, lies in the fourth house's own territory: letting go of the need to manage life from the outside in, relaxing an exacting standard of professional perfection, and making real room for home, family and the private, emotional foundation a public life is actually built upon. This Vedic reading is of Rahu in the fourth bhava, not the Western house above: a chart's bhava number and its Western house number often differ, so a reader stands in this bhava only where the chart's own bhava number says so. Rahu in that bhava, the house of home, mother and inner comfort, is read as magnifying whatever the house governs past its usual proportion, producing an unconventional relationship to home, property or the mother, sometimes foreign in character or unusually large in scale. Classical sources read a well supported Rahu here as capable of unusual comfort and property gained by unconventional means, while a poorly supported one is read as bringing domestic instability or a restlessness with one's own roots, and the tradition's remedial measures are prescribed accordingly.

The story

The fourth house is one of the four angles, which Alan Leo also calls the cardinal houses and which he says show all things that must be expressed outwardly, the physical matters connected with the external life; from each of these angles, he holds, the other houses receive their value, the cardinal points denoting the root of the life to be expressed. A node placed there is read as unusually load bearing rather than a quiet background influence: whatever theme the node carries is read into the very foundation of a life, not tucked away in a quieter corner of the chart. The Western evolutionary astrology tradition pairs the fourth house consistently with the tenth across from it, reading the two as one axis running from private foundation to public achievement, and treats a node on this axis as a lesson in learning where a life's real security actually comes from. Leo names this angle the Nadir, or Lower Meridian, and gives it the environment, the life of the householder, and hidden and secret matters connected with parentage or domestic affairs, summarising the fourth as the personal environment where the tenth is the individual environment, so a node here is read at the base of the figure rather than at its summit.
