The north node (Rahu) in the first house
the north lunar node in the first Western house, read in the Western evolutionary tradition, and the Vedic tradition's reading of Rahu in the bhava of the same number
What the tradition reads
With the north node in the first house, Cafe Astrology's own reading of the placement sets the south node in the seventh, and describes a habit of co-dependency, indecisiveness and trouble in one to one relationships, a tendency to prefer the comfort of being thought a good, agreeable person over the discomfort of standing alone. Growth, by this reading, lies in the first house's own territory: learning to trust one's own instincts, to lead without fear, and to discover that acting alone is genuinely survivable, so that seeking internal peace, rather than only peace within a partnership, becomes the surer route to real happiness. This Vedic reading is of Rahu in the first bhava, not the Western house above: a chart's bhava number and its Western house number often differ, so a reader stands in this bhava only where the chart's own bhava number says so. Rahu in that bhava, the house of the physical body and the native's own person, is read as colouring the self presented to the world with something of Rahu's own nature: unconventional, sometimes foreign in origin or association, and larger than the person might otherwise be, for good or for difficulty depending on Rahu's dignity and aspects. Classical sources read a well placed Rahu here as producing an unusual magnetism, while a poorly placed one is read as bringing confusion about identity or a restlessness with one's own body and appearance, and the tradition's remedial measures are prescribed accordingly.
The story
The first house is one of the four angles, which Alan Leo also calls the cardinal houses and which he says show all things that must be expressed outwardly, the physical matters connected with the external life; from each of these angles, he holds, the other houses receive their value, the cardinal points denoting the root of the life to be expressed. A node placed there is read as unusually load bearing rather than a quiet background influence: whatever theme the node carries is read into the very shape of how a person appears and acts, not tucked away in a quieter corner of the chart. The Western tradition reads the node axis house by house, treating the angular houses, the first among them, as the placements where a life's growth edge is most visible to other people, whether the person carrying it wants that visibility or not. Leo's own reading of the first house, the quality of the life forces and the material brought to the front, is what leaves a node here so little cover: at an angle it asks to be lived rather than merely felt.
