The Vishkambha nitya yoga

a birth, or an activity begun, under the Vishkambha nitya yoga, the panchanga's own yoga found by summing the Sun's and Moon's longitudes, not a planetary combination yoga

What the tradition reads

Vishkambha is the first of the twenty seven nitya yogas, the panchanga limb Wikipedia's article on the Panchangam describes as found from the sum of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes divided into shares of thirteen degrees and twenty minutes, a computation with no bearing on a planetary combination yoga formed by grahas placed together within a single chart. Onesanatan.com reads its name as poison pitcher or door bolt, names Yama as its ruling deity, and classes it inauspicious. Astrogle.com's own reading, given under the spelling Vishkumbha, disagrees outright, classing the yoga auspicious and describing a native who prevails over others, wins out over enemies, obtains property and grows wealthy. This entry records the disagreement as the sources give it: the very first of the twenty seven yogas is read as unlucky by one source and as a mark of victory by the other.

The story

Yama, Wikipedia's article records, is the son of the solar deity Vivasvat and Saranyu, and the first mortal ever to die, a distinction that in Vedic tradition made him the one who first found the way to the world beyond and so became ruler of the departed, judging each soul afterward and assigning it to the ancestors, to hell, or back to rebirth according to its deeds. The Katha Upanishad tempers this severity, showing Yama as teacher to the boy Nachiketa, granting him, after three boons, the very knowledge of what lies beyond death. A yoga named for a poison pitcher or a barred door, ruled by the god who stands at exactly that threshold, judging what passes through it, fits onesanatan.com's cautious reading closely, though the same figure's power to decide a contest's outcome once and for all may equally be what astrogle.com's opposite verdict, victory over every rival, is reading into the very same closed door.
