The Shula nitya yoga
a birth, or an activity begun, under the Shula nitya yoga, the panchanga's own yoga found by summing the Sun's and Moon's longitudes, not a planetary combination yoga
What the tradition reads
Shula is the ninth of the twenty seven nitya yogas, the panchanga limb Wikipedia's article on the Panchangam derives from the sum of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes, distinct from any planetary combination yoga formed by grahas placed together within a single chart. Onesanatan.com reads its name as spear, thorn or pain, names Sarpa, the serpents, as its ruling deity, and classes it inauspicious, a verdict astrogle.com's own reading confirms under the spelling Soola, describing a native as confrontational and contrary, quarrelsome and quick to anger. The two sources agree closely here, treating Shula as one of the more overtly hostile of the twenty seven, its pain read as an active, wounding force rather than as passive misfortune, the sharpness of its own name carried through into the temperament it is said to produce.
The story
The Nagas, Wikipedia's article records, are the serpent children of the sage Kashyapa and his wife Kadru, capable of taking human, part serpent or wholly serpent form, locked in an old and bitter rivalry with Garuda, the eagle. Yet the same beings can serve rather than merely threaten, since it is Vasuki, king of the nagas, wound around Mount Mandara as the rope by which gods and demons together churn the ocean of milk, who makes possible the recovery of the nectar of immortality at all. A yoga named for a spear or a thorn, ruled by beings whose venom is real but whose strength, wound the right way around the right axis, can also be made to serve the whole world's greatest undertaking, fits Shula's inauspicious reading as a caution rather than a simple curse: the pain in its name is a force that still needs the right hand to turn it toward any good use.
