Shravana
a Moon, Ascendant or other key point in Shravana, the twenty second lunar mansion
What the tradition reads
Shravana is the twenty second of the twenty seven lunar mansions, occupying the middle portion of Capricorn in the sidereal zodiac. Its ruling planet is the Moon, its symbol three footprints, and its presiding deity is Vishnu, preserver of the cosmic order. A Moon, Ascendant or other significant point placed here is read as bringing intellectual gifts and real artistic talent, natives skilled in music, dance or acting and possessed of a wide store of knowledge gathered through genuine study. The tradition credits Shravana natives with warmth toward parents and family, moral seriousness, a religious and honest bearing, and a perfectionism that keeps their own work largely free of visible flaws, alongside compassion, courage and a readiness to forgive rather than hold a grudge. Where the placement is unsupported elsewhere, the same drive toward flawless accomplishment is read as shrewdness turned selfish, a willingness to act against others if it serves whatever target has been set. Shravana's own name means hearing, or listening, and its three footprints connect the mansion directly to a single Vishnu myth of stepping across the whole of creation in a very small number of measured strides.
The story
Vishnu, the preserver within the trinity that also holds Brahma the creator and Shiva the destroyer, is said to descend to earth in avatar form whenever righteousness weakens, restoring dharma before departing again, ten such avatars named in the classical count from the fish Matsya through to Kalki, still to come. Among them, Vamana, the dwarf, approached the demon king Mahabali and asked for only as much land as he could cover in three steps, a request granted before Mahabali's advisers could warn him of the visitor's true nature. Vishnu then grew without limit, covering the whole earth and the underworld with one stride and the whole of the sky with the second, leaving no room for a third until Mahabali, refusing to break his word, offered his own head to be measured instead. A mansion named for listening, symbolised by three footprints, and placed under the very god whose three steps once measured the entire universe, reads Shravana's gift for absorbing knowledge as an echo of that same totalising reach, a mind built to take in everything within its stride rather than only a part of it.
