Rohini

a Moon, Ascendant or other key point in Rohini, the fourth lunar mansion

What the tradition reads

Rohini is the fourth of the twenty seven lunar mansions, occupying the middle portion of Taurus in the sidereal zodiac. Its ruling planet is the Moon, its symbol a cart or chariot drawn by a pair of oxen, and its presiding deity is Prajapati, lord of creation, later identified with Brahma. A Moon, Ascendant or other significant point placed here is read as bringing an apparent calmness and gentleness, a considerable charm and a poised, stable presence that tends to influence others through gesture and manner rather than through argument. The tradition gives Rohini natives a soft, affectionate temper that seldom flares into anger or holds a grudge afterward, together with a creative, imaginative cast of mind and a real love of natural beauty and comfort. The same imagination that gives Rohini its charm is read as its weakness where it is unsupported elsewhere in the chart, a tendency toward idle daydreaming rather than action, indecision, and a fickleness of purpose that can leave real ability underused. The mansion takes its own name from Rohini, the wife the Moon himself is said to have loved above the rest, and the tradition reads that inherited favouritism directly into its native charm.

The story

Prajapati, whose name simply means lord of creatures, stands at the head of the Vedic account of creation and became closely identified in later tradition with Brahma, the creator god of the Hindu trinity; through Kashyapa, sometimes identified as Prajapati himself, he is named father of the Adityas, the asuras, and of humankind besides. The mansion's own name, however, belongs to a different figure sharing the same word, Rohini, daughter of the sage Daksha and one of the Moon's twenty seven wives, the one he loved beyond all the rest despite her father's repeated warnings, provoking the curse that first taught the Moon to wax and wane. A mansion carrying both the name of creation's own lord and the name of the one wife a god could not help favouring above every other duty owed equally, reads its Rohini natives as people whose gentleness and charm come from exactly this place, an ease of being loved that asks for nothing and yet reliably receives it.
